MISSISSAUGA, Ont. -- The Toronto Argonauts are Zach Collaross team for the foreseeable future. Collaros takes over as the starting quarterback after Argos coach Scott Milanovich dropped a bombshell Thursday, announcing incumbent Ricky Ray is out approximately six weeks with a shoulder injury. Ray, 33, was injured in the first quarter of Torontos 35-14 home loss to Calgary on Friday. After throwing the ball away, a scrambling Ray extended his right arm to brace his fall upon being hit by Stampeders defensive lineman Charleston Hughes. "Ricky has a partial tear (in) a muscle in his shoulder thats called the teres major, Milanovich said. "Ive been informed thats not part of the rotator cuff. "Hes going to be out approximately six weeks. It could be a couple of weeks less or a couple of weeks more depending on he responds to his rehab." The teres major muscle is located in the back of the shoulder. It helps rotate and extend the arm and damaging it causes pain in the back of the shoulder, back and upper arm. Fortunately, Ray wont require surgery. But Toronto (5-3) -- which tops the East Division ahead of Hamilton (4-4) and Montreal (3-5) -- will be minus its offensive catalyst for an important stretch that includes a home-and-home series with the Alouettes and a western road trip to Regina, Calgary and Edmonton before hosting the arch-rival Ticats on Oct. 4. "Pressure is what you make (of) it," Collaros said. "As long as were prepared as a team and Im prepared I think we all feel comfortable out there. "We have a big home-and-away series with Montreal . . . we just have to get after it this week and be ready." Ray missed three late-season starts last year with a knee injury before returning to lead Toronto on its Grey Cup march. "Hopefully we get a similar result," Milanovich said. "Its part of the game, theres injuries in the sport of football and I have faith Zach, Trevor (Harris) and Josh (Portis) will go out there and win games for us. "Obviously its the quarterback and its a different piece of the puzzle you have to replace but all teams prepare for this." The six-foot, 216-pound Collaros is anxious to be Torontos starter for the foreseeable future. "Its not a good thing that had to happen under these circumstances," he said. "But I look forward to leading this team these next few weeks." Collaros certainly has big shoes to fill. Ray has completed 148-of-189 passes (78.3 per cent) this season for 1,824 yards with 15 TDs and no interceptions. Ray was especially sharp in his four last starts, completing 69-of-79 passes (87.3 per cent) for 907 yards and nine TDs before his injury. Toronto boasts the CFLs top passing attack (320.6 yards per game) and is third in scoring, averaging 30.5 points. But the offence has struggled establishing the run as Torontos ground attack is ranked last in the CFL (82.5 yards). That something Milanovich wants to improve upon regardless of whos at quarterback. Collaros was impressive in his CFL starting debut. After a full week of practice replacing an injured Ray (knee), Collaros completed 21-of-25 passes for 253 yards and three TDs while adding 28 yards rushing July 30 in 38-12 home win over B.C. Pressed into action versus Calgary with little prep time, Collaros finished 16-of-26 passing for 221 yards with an interception -- Torontos first this season. "Last week really wasnt as much a function of him," Milanovich said. "One of the things I thought that hurt us against Calgary was we didnt run it very well or very often so we put pressure on Zach to drop back and make plays. "The one thing Ive talked to him about is just protecting the ball outside the pocket. Youre going to throw an interception now and then, I can live with those, just make sure youve got two hands on the ball at all times." Milanovich will give Collaros ample opportunity to lead Torontos offence. "Ive told Zach the same thing I did against B.C., which was its his game, theres no quick hook," Milanovich said. "Im not waiting for him to make a mistake to put someone else in. "Now if Zach were to not play well for an extended period of time wed always have to do whats best for the team but its his game. I dont anticipate that happening." Those are reassuring words for the former Cincinnati Bearcats star. "It makes you feel good to know they trust you," Collaros said. "I think thats a product of me coming to work every day and knowing what were supposed to do whether Im playing or not." Milanovich said Torontos offensive gameplan will change with Collaros at the helm. The 24-year-old is a much better runner than Ray and the Argos want to take advantage of that. "A lot of the principles are still the same but we may move him around a bit more, we may ask him to do some quarterback runs which makes it more difficult for a defence to have to defend the run," Milanovich said. "His mobility is obviously a lot different than Rickys and well do our best to take advantage of his strengths." Many CFL teams are rotating quarterbacks in games this season to create on-field mismatches and throw opposing defences a curve. When Ray suffered a knee injury July 19 in a 35-19 road win over Winnipeg, Milanovich alternated both Collaros and Harris but isnt looking to do the same this time around. "I wont say I will never do it but generally I like to give the ball to one guy and let him go, Milanovich said. "Coming off the bench as a backup quarterback is one of the hardest things I think there is to do in sports because you dont get any reps and youre cold and then youre asked to go in and win a game. "But thats what youre paid to do and I think Zach will embrace the fact hes going to get a full week of reps." Young had 29 points while Pau Gasol added 22 to lead the short-handed Lakers to a 112-106 win at the Air Canada Centre, halting Torontos six-game home win streak. Los Angeles (16-25) used an attacking style to rally from deficits of 19 and 17 points and earn its second straight road victory but just its third in 15 games overall. "We didnt get defence into the game," Toronto coach Dwane Casey said. "We played their game . . . it was pretty but we didnt get defence into the game. "That allowed those big runs and thats not who we are. We have to be a defence-first team, not a three-point shooting team . . . we got caught up in their quick threes, which were not very good at." The Lakers hit 12-of-22 (54.5 per cent) three-pointers but also made 26-of-28 free throws. Toronto finished 9 of 30 (30 per cent) from beyond the arc and held a 47-31 edge in rebounding but only attempted 11 free throws, making nine. "That tells us either were not getting the calls or were not driving to the rim," Casey said. "They were the aggressor going to the basket. We had some bonehead fouls on some three-point shots, thats something you shouldnt do. "But it starts on the defensive end. We didnt get up into people and when we did react we reacted late and subsequently you get fouls called." DeMar DeRozan had 23 points while Kyle Lowry added 21 for Toronto (20-19), which lost the chance for its first-ever season sweep of the Lakers. The Raptors won the first meeting 106-94 on Dec. 8. Kyle Lowry added 21 points for Toronto while Patrick Patterson added 17 points coming off the bench. Lowrys three-pointer pulled Toronto to within 102-101 with just over two minutes remaining. Ryan Kellys three free throws made it 105-101 before Youngs three-pointer put the Lakers ahead 108-103 with 1:15 left. Youngs two free throws with 20.5 seconds made it 110-104 and effectively cemented the win. Kelly said Young was a difference-maker for the Lakers. "The one thing Nick does is score, especially at the end of clocks," said Kelly, who finished with 17 points. "There are not many people in the league who can do what he does. "We have seven seconds on the clock and you get Nick the ball and he finds a way to get a shot or get to the line . . . we need that." The Lakers were without all-stars Steve Nash of Victoria and Kobe Bryant. Nash, a two-time NBA MVP, is out with a back injury while Bryant, a five-time league champion and Los Angeless all-time scoring leader, is sidelined with a fractured left knee. "After not feeling it in the first half, we just got a bit more aggressive on defence and they felt us," Lakers coach Mike DAntoni said. "You have to give them credit, they hit a lot of good shots to start with but our guys somehow found the resolve to stay into them and itt worked out.dddddddddddd" The Lakers improved to 27-8 all-time against Toronto, including 13-5 at the ACC. "Weve got to understand no matter now big the lead is no team is going to lay down," DeRozan said. "Theyre going to play extremely hard to try and get back and weve got to understand that and withstand the runs theyre trying to make. We didnt do that. "We gave up too many threes. We know theyre a three-point shooting team and we left them in their comfort zone and they knocked them down." Lowery couldnt hide his disappointment about Torontos inability to twice put the Lakers away after surging into commanding double-digit leads. "Yeah, it sucks," he said. "They did a good job of playing the way they wanted and making us play that way also. "They attacked us a lot more. We settled for a lot more jumpshots and we didnt attack as much as we couldve to get to the free-throw line as much as they did." L.A. took an 82-81 lead into the fourth, thanks to three Young free throws with 27.3 seconds left. Young converted a technical on Terrence Ross, then hit two-of-three from the line after being fouled by Ross on a three-point shot. The resilient Lakers overcame a 17-point deficit to take the lead. Toronto opened the third on a 14-2 run to go ahead 73-56 but the Lakers tied it 79-79 on Manny Harriss three-pointer with under three minutes remaining after both Kendall Marshall and Young connected from beyond the arc. Gasols two free throws with 3.4 seconds remaining cut Torontos half-time advantage to 58-54. The Raptors surged into a commanding 50-31 lead in the quarter before being outscored by the Lakers 23-8 the rest of the way. DeRozan was a one-man show for Toronto, scoring 12 of his 16 first-half points in the second. The Raptors were 5 of 16 (31.3 per cent) from three-point range in the half while L.A. was 6-of-10. Toronto led 36-29 after the first, erasing a 24-20 deficit by outscoring L.A. 16-5 over the final 2:58. Patterson led the way for the Raptors with eight points, including two three-pointers as the home team hit on 14-of-19 field goals and 5-of-6 three-pointers in the quarter. Gasol played a big part in leading the Lakers to their early lead with 10 points.
