ASHBURN, Va. -- The Washington Redskins and the NFL are reviewing an incident in which a game official allegedly directed profane words at left tackle Trent Williams. "You just cant use that type of language to get your point across," Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said. Williams said he was called vulgar names by official No. 81 -- which would be umpire Roy Ellison -- during a Redskins possession late in the second quarter of Sundays 24-16 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Other players say they heard the words as well, and a replay shows Ellison gesturing at Williams while walking backward just before a snap, with Williams, quarterback Robert Griffin III and tight end Niles Paul turning to look back at Ellison. "To me, this is a players league," Williams told reporters after the game. "I just dont think theres no room for you to have to take that from the team and the refs. I think its very unprofessional. ... Im at a loss for words. You never expect that, as a player, going into the game to have to beef with the refs also." "Its psychologically -- youve got to think youre going against the refs, and you cant play the refs," Williams said. "At the end of the day, theyve got the last call. When that flag comes out of their pocket, its their choice to pick it up or not. You know, thats a helpless feeling." Shanahan said he has spoken to the players involved. Some of the linemen were wearing microphones, which the league can use to verify exactly what happened. "I feel very strongly about words that were used to our players," Shanahan said, "because you have a number of players that said they heard it. Im disappointed in what had happened, but thats probably all I can discuss at this point." After the game, a pool reporter approached the officials bus and asked head referee Walt Coleman for comment. Practice day on Friday saw Fernando Alonso bring his Ferrari around Circuit Gilles Villeneuve with the fastest time in the morning practice, only to see the Hamilton and Rosberg dominate the afternoon session in their Mercedes AMGs. "The Ferraris looked quite close today and the rest of the field seemed closer in general, but hopefully not too close," said Hamilton. "Its very hard to overtake here, so pole position is important. "Nico looked very quick as well, so I have my work cut out for sure. Well find out everyones pace in qualifying (Saturday) afternoon, so lets wait and see what happens." When the Mercedes drivers switched to supersoft tires 30 minutes into the afternoon, they were too quick for the field. The two-time world champion Spaniard, a winner in Canada in 2006, is a distant third in drivers standings behind the two Mercedes but it is still early in the 19-race season. He said this week his car is improving, even if the gap with Mercedes will be very difficult to close. "Its going to be tough," said Alonso. "There are updates coming to the car that weve been working on for some weeks. "All these hopes, we need to see it on the track. Its one of the shorter circuits, so we expect the times to be really close. So we need to find perfection. One or two tenths can be six or seven positions. We need to be in the front of those cars." The large crowd that turned out on a cool, overcast day got its first earful of the new F1 engines, which no longer have the high-pitched whine that was the sports signature sound for years.
